2006 Pilchuck Auction Centerpieces
2006 Pilchuck Auction Centerpieces

This colorful blown-glass vase with sandblasted surface finish by Seattle-based glass artist Chuck Lopez was designed for the 2006 fundraising auction for the Pilchuck Glass School, founded in 1971 by Dale Chihuly. Working with a team of volunteer glass artists from the United States, Canada, Denmark, and Japan, Lopez implemented the creation of 130 centerpieces in just under 10 days in advance of the gala event. The invitation to design and implement the Pilchuck centerpieces has become a prestigious commission for young and mid-career glassblowers.

Historical replica of a dragon-stem goblet in The Corning Museum of Glass
Historical replica of a dragon-stem goblet in The Corning Museum of Glass

Blown and manipulated glass by artist William Gudenrath, 2010. The resident advisor of The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass, Gudenrath is a noted glassblower, scholar, lecturer, and teacher. He is an authority on historical hot glassworking techniques from ancient Egypt through the Renaissance, and has presented lectures and demonstrations throughout the world. His works are sold in exclusive stores and galleries nationwide. This exquisite piece is a replica of a dragon-stem goblet in the permanent collection of The Corning Museum of Glass. Known in Italian as "vetri a serpenti" (serpent glasses), dragon-stem goblets were first made in Venice in the seventeenth century. They were imitated in the Netherlands by producers of "façon de Venise" glass. The Venetian glass industry enjoyed a golden age during the Renaissance. By the early 1500s, the wonders of Venetian glass were well known throughout Western Europe.

“Game Night #1”
Game Night #1

Framed acrylic and enamel on canvas by artist John Bowman, 2017. John Bowman is a professor of art in the School of Visual Arts at Penn State. His 2014 solo exhibition at Winston Wächter Fine Art in New York was highly praised in "ARTnews." Bowman has shown his work internationally and with several New York galleries, including the Holly Solomon Gallery, the Lang O’Hara Gallery, and the Tibor de Nagy Gallery. His work is included in many private and museum collections. Bowman works in a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, and sculpture, and he has also worked on a number of public art projects, among them a recent collaborative project in Shkodra, Albania. He is one of the co-founders of “First Street Green,” an urban cultural space that provides a forum for art, film, dance, and sustainable practices for the Lower East Side community. "Game Night #1" is from a recent body of spray works in which the artist uses cut and torn paper stencils and an airbrush. Anyone familiar with evening football games in Happy Valley will recognize the otherworldly glow that Bowman captures—a sublime spectacle, both natural and manmade.

“Improvisation” Vase
“Improvisation” Vase

Blown, sandblasted, and assembled glass by British studio glass artist Pauline Solven, c. 1997. Solven first studied glass at the Stourbridge College of Art in the early 1960s before continuing her studies at the Royal College of Art, London. In 1969, she was invited to manage and be the resident artist of The Glasshouse, where for the first time in England, the public could observe glass artists working in studios. Her work is included in prominent museums and private collections throughout the world. Critics have described the “crisp, almost weightless quality of abstraction” in Solven’s work, “with its luminous and freely composed translucent color that draws on the natural and manmade landscape and its changing passages of light. Solven has developed complex forms that make each piece persuasive both as sculpture and painting.”
